Redeye

Redeye is an eccentric chief of the bumbling Chickiepan Indian tribe. The overweight, somewhat befuddled Redeye is confounded in his quest for glory by his uppity mustang, Loco; his practical-joker son, Porky; and his daughter, Tawnee, who is in love with the tribe idiot, Tanglefoot.

Redeye is one of the brave feathered men of the prairie, who hunts for buffalos, and reads nature like an open book.  He is more or less related to all the legendary Indian heroes – Deerfoot, Geronimo and Sitting Bull. Sometimes he digs out the old battle-axe and dances howling around the camp fire.

He sticks firmly to the proud traditions of his forefathers and tries to lead his tribe with an iron fist.  However, that task is not easy.  The former war path is cobbled nowadays and Redeye’s tribal friends don’t have much underneath their scalps and they’re also incredibly cowardly.  He also meets resistance from his own squaw.  She is a sharp-tongued woman, who keeps her moccasins firmly on the ground.  His only real consolation in life is his kids.  His son follows in his footsteps and his daughter is the most beautiful girl since the days of Pocahontas.

Redeye is filled with quirky and funny elements and anachronisms.  It comments on a number of current issues such as nature conservation, ecology and business ethics without being over-explicit that is often typical to American strips.

Redeye was created by Gordon Bess in 1967 and is now written and illustrated by artist Mel Casson. The strip is a warm parody of the Western genre.
