A Lawyer, A Doctor & A Cop centres around occupational humour and the three main characters whose personal lives are often defined and coloured by their day jobs. Each day’s strip features a light-hearted and comedic stand-alone joke about the world of a lawyer, a doctor or a cop.
The back story that drives the strip’s humour is the friendship between the three characters that grew out of their connection to Sophie Wagner, the sister of Detective Stan Defoe who is also the proprietor of the diner which they all regularly frequent.
In addition to Sophie Wagner, A Lawyer, A Doctor & A Cop features Samuel Rhodes, a defence lawyer and married father who has grown somewhat sceptical and disenchanted with his chosen profession; Lyndon Peel, a single, sophisticated and opinionated psychiatrist; and Detective Stan Defoe, a dedicated, streetwise cop and protective older brother of Sophie.
Meehan, whose previous cartoon work includes the syndicated comic strip Meehan Streak and single comic panels for the new talent showcase The New Breed, choose these three specific professions because lawyers, doctors and police officers are such iconic characters, especially on American television. He has an appreciation of these chosen professionals through their mainstay presence on such popular and well-received shows as Perry Mason, Dr. Kildare, MASH, Frasier, E.R., Hill Street Blues, NYPD Blue, CSI and Law & Order.
"I am very excited about the launch of A Lawyer, A Doctor & A Cop," says Jay Kennedy, editor in chief of King Features. “Kieran has a very unique drawing style. It is sophisticated, yet easy to grasp. The strip is not an attack on these professions or the professionals themselves. It takes a look at the legal and healthcare systems that these individuals reside in and plays off the quirks of all involved. I think that real-life lawyers, psychiatrists and cops, as well as their family and friends, will recognize aspects of their professions and laugh."
